West Portland Boxing FAQ

"What ages can someone box on the team?"

Boxers can compete at local, regional, and national shows from the age of 8. To compete in the Olympics you must be between the ages of 19 and 40. Older boxers can compete from the age of 35 in the Masters division.

"When does the team/class workout?"

Team workouts are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings from 6 to 8 PM. The fitness class meets on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 5 to 6 PM and on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings from 10 to 11 AM.

"How do I sign up?"

Show up in the gym (preferably fifteen minutes before the workout begins) and talk to a coach.

"Do you take beginners or the inexperienced for the team/class?"

We take all levels of experience for both the team and fitness class—no prior boxing experience is necessary. Inexperienced boxers on the team will not spar until the coach allows it.

"Is there sparring during the fitness class?"

No.

"What is the fitness class workout like?"

The class does the same conditioning exercises and drills as the team, except without sparring—it is a no-contact workout. Expect to sweat.

"What equipment do I need to bring?"

Wear workout clothes and we suggest bringing a hand towel and water. Everything else is provided by the gym. Boxers usually end up buying their own handwraps and gloves which are available for sale at the gym. Team members will also need a mouthguard before they are able to spar.
